Unlocking the creativity.

Interested in writing a novel, but not sure who your characters are or what it is they’re trying to accomplish? Do the essential elements of your story feel elusive, just out of reach?

I’ve spent more than two decades working with books as the publisher of two respected small presses, then an acquisitions editor, and currently as a freelance editor and writer. I am on a constant search for exploring new layers of creativity in matters of capturing the human experience.

For the last few years I have been using paint and the process of painting to give representation to stories in new and exciting ways. It has been a period of profound personal discovery and my sense of connection to the larger Universe seeking to be translated.

Multiple authors, most of whom are friends above all else, have patiently gone through this synthesization and balancifying of underexplored modes of expression. To a person, these experiences have been helpful in unsticking people by getting to unexpected conclusions and discoveries that helped make significant progress on their projects.

It’s an emerging art and science. No two experiences are alike, but so far all experiences have been meaningfully helpful.

I’m now ready to share this practice with others. This workshop is open to individuals or groups of up to 4 people.  I am glad to provide suggestions, but the location of the workshop is up to you and what will work best for your goals.

What you get:

  • Before meeting in person we will talk about your project, focusing on your goals and challenges. I will read up to 5,000 words of existing material per attendee.
  • Studio sessions using paint, sound, light, and projection to explore concepts (both obvious and hidden) contained within your book.
  • Continued discussion about your project as new details and understanding emerge. Some topics that may be covered include: character development, plot creation, dramatic tension, and what it is you’re trying to express.
  • Follow up phone call to check in, brainstorm, hold accountable.

Note: I am only able to do a limited amount of these workshops per year. Availability is dependent on a first come, first served basis. If there are particular times you’re looking for, check first for availability.
