My Editorial Philosophy

Hi. If you’re here, it’s probably because you’ve got a story you’d like to tell. Maybe you’re working on a novel. Maybe you’re finally sitting down to write a memoir. Likely, it’s been something that’s been brewing inside you.

I want you to know that I’m listening.

I’ve spent twenty years in the publishing industry. I founded two critically acclaimed small presses (Bleak House Books & Tyrus Books). I was named to Publishers Weekly’s “Fifty Under Forty” list. Books we published were finalists for and won awards and were reviewed in major publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, Library Journal, Booklist, People and Entertainment Weekly. I was the Executive Director of the Independent Publishers Caucus. Even now—I’m a senior acquisitions editor for Crooked Lane Books.

And that’s cool.

But during those twenty years, I’ve also spent a lot of time across America. I’ve slept on couches, had dinner with friends and strangers in big cities and small towns. I have been fortunate enough to be invited into the lives of people in all 50 states. Listening. I am desperate to understand the human condition through the lived in lives of the people I meet.

That’s the thing I’m most reliant on when I’m editing books.

The rest of it is just words.

"...he isn’t just an editor but an accomplice, a facilitator, and, at times, a magician."

"Ben LeRoy is that rarest of things – an editor who understands his writers’ intentions even better than they do – which means he isn’t just an editor but an accomplice, a facilitator, and, at times, a magician. Working with Ben not only made Small Treasons a better book; it made me a better writer. His editorial guidance has been—and remains—one of the treasures of my writing life.
