Hey. Can I have a minute of your time?
Independent bookstores are an absolutely critical part of our communities. And right now it’s very important that we support them when and how we can. If I could, I’d fill all of your libraries with books purchased from independent book stores.
This recent article from Forbes lays out a more detailed argument. I encourage you to read it.
If you’re far away from an indie bookstore, you’ve also got the option of supporting independent bookstores by making your purchase online through Bookshop where you can select an indie bookstore that will be supported by your purchase. Unfamiliar with Bookshop? Here’s an article from the Chicago Tribune that gives you an idea of the goals and purposes–(Bookshop.org hopes to play Rebel Alliance to Amazon’s Empire)
Last week I bought books for a few people. It was great to see the enthusiasm for books and bookstores and I’d like to continue that effort weekly for the foreseeable future.
Some people asked what the catch was last week. There isn’t one. I’m just a dude who enjoys knowing that people are reading, that we all bear witness to the magic of books, and that at a time like this, it’s my belief that we need to do everything we can to uplift community.
On October 20, 2020 I will buy books for the first three people to send me a DM on Twitter (@thebenleroy) with a book and a bookstore. Please let me know if you’re able to do curbside pickup at your local store (provided it’s available).
My love to you all,
Want to help?
If there is anybody out there who is in a position to also purchase books for people for the reasons I gave or for your own reasons, I’d love to have you join me. Maybe you can buy one book. Maybe you can buy five. Whatever works for you works for me. If you’re interested in buying books for strangers from independent booksellers, here are two ways that we can make that happen. I’m totally open to other options that aren’t covered below. DM me or send an email to leroy.benATgmail.com to discuss.
- I can put you directly in touch with another Twitter user who is looking for a book. If it’s helpful, I can establish all of the details around book and bookstore and then make an introduction to the two of you. Or, if you want to handle it all from the beginning, I can remove myself from the process (unless you have questions).
- I can provide a list of book/bookstore requests to you that include the anticipated amount, you can send money to me through Venmo/Paypal/etc. and once the transaction is complete, I’ll send you a receipt to confirm purchase.
